About Last Night: Gregorian Chants and Timeless Villages

Last evening, I had the privilege of visiting the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos, where I experienced one of Spain’s most remarkable cultural traditions: the performance of Gregorian chants by the resident Benedictine monks.

Hearing the voices of 23 monks resonate through the monastery’s magnificent Romanesque cloisters was quite captivating. The centuries-old chants, echoing through this sacred space, created an atmosphere of serenity and contemplation that is difficult to put into words.

Located in the quiet village of Santo Domingo de Silos in the Province of Burgos, the historic Benedictine abbey is internationally renowned for its exceptional two-story Romanesque cloister, its iconic cypress tree, and its enduring tradition of Gregorian chant. It stands as one of Spain’s most significant examples of religious, architectural, and cultural heritage.

Experiences such as this remind me that outstanding wine tourism extends well beyond the vineyard. The most memorable journeys are enriched by history, gastronomy, spirituality, and an authentic sense of place, elements that together create a deeper connection between visitors and the destination.
