Beyond the Tasting Room: How Portugal’s Alentejo Is Redefining Experiential Wine Tourism

Portugal’s Alentejo wine region is demonstrating how wine tourism is evolving from traditional tastings toward more immersive, participatory experiences.

From August 25 to September 20, 2026, Casa Relvas is opening its annual Harvest Programme at Herdade de São Miguel, inviting visitors to experience one of the most important moments in the winemaking calendar firsthand.

Tourists move beyond observing the harvest to actively participating. The approximately five-hour experience includes walking through the vineyards and learning about grape varieties, hand-picking grapes, traditional foot-treading and tasting freshly pressed must. Visitors also taste Casa Relvas wines and olive oils, with the option of adding a traditional Alentejo lunch featuring regional cuisine.

From Wine Tasting to Wine Participation

What makes the programme particularly relevant is its integration of wine, agriculture, gastronomy, tradition and direct interaction with the people behind the estate.

This reflects a broader direction in experiential wine tourism: moving beyond the conventional cellar tour and tasting toward experiences that connect visitors more directly with the vineyard, production process and culture of the destination.

Harvest tourism is particularly effective because it brings visitors closer to wine at its agricultural source. It can also strengthen connections between wineries, gastronomy, local producers, accommodation and other tourism businesses – encouraging visitors to experience more of the wider destination.

A Model for Wine Destinations

Alentejo provides a useful example for wine regions internationally. Authentic regional traditions can become compelling tourism experiences while maintaining their connection to place.

The opportunity for wine destinations is increasingly to move beyond “come and taste our wine” toward “come and experience our place.”

The harvest has always been central to the story of wine. What is changing is the visitor’s role within that story – from observer to participant.
