Not Your Average Costco: Inside Napa’s Impressive Wine Selection

Even a trip to Costco can become a wine discovery in Napa Valley.

I stopped by Costco in Napa and was impressed not only by the size of the wine department, but by the breadth and calibre of its selection.

This is not your average Costco wine aisle.

What immediately stood out to me was the diversity – alongside California and Napa Valley wines was an impressive international selection from Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Rhône and Italy, complemented by a strong Champagne offering ranging from familiar houses to prestige cuvées.

One display featured Dom Pérignon, Veuve Clicquot, Moët & Chandon and JCB, while another showcased notable French wines, including Burgundy and classified Bordeaux. Bottles approaching US$300 sat just a few feet from excellent-value wines under US$20.

That contrast is part of what makes the selection so interesting. There is something for almost every wine consumer, from an everyday bottle to recognized producers and special-occasion wines.

A Retail Reflection of Napa’s Wine Culture

The visit also offered an interesting perspective on Napa Valley as a wine destination.

We naturally associate Napa with vineyards, tasting rooms, winemaker dinners and luxury hospitality. But wine tourism extends beyond the winery.
