White Wine Deserves Its Own Emoji: New Zealand Leads Global Campaign for Unicode Recognition

New Zealand Winegrowers has launched a focused global initiative, “The Great White Wine Toast,” to advocate for the world’s first official white wine emoji.

The campaign addresses a clear gap: while red wine, Champagne, and cocktails are represented in digital communication, white wine, one of the fastest-growing and most globally consumed wine styles, remains absent.

“Wine culture has evolved, but our emojis haven’t,” notes Charlotte Read, General Manager, Brand. “Refreshing, vibrant white wine doesn’t yet have a voice in the emoji landscape.”

A Cultural Gap in the Digital Language of Wine

Despite the ubiquity of white wine, from Sauvignon Blanc to Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, current emoji options fail to reflect its identity. The campaign proposes a pale-gold wine in a classic glass, visually aligned with the aromatic, crisp profile that defines modern white wine consumption.

As digital communication becomes increasingly visual, the absence of a white wine emoji is more than symbolic; it represents a misalignment between global consumption trends and cultural representation.

Global Mobilization: From Social Media to Unicode

The initiative is structured as a coordinated international advocacy effort, including:

  • A public petition to the Unicode Consortium
  • Social amplification via #WhiteWineEmoji
  • A synchronized global toast on May 1 (International Sauvignon Blanc Day)
  • Month-long engagement tied to key varietal celebrations in May

The campaign will culminate in a formal Unicode submission supported by engagement data, petition signatures, and cultural relevance metrics.

Why New Zealand Is Leading the Charge

New Zealand’s positioning is deliberate. Its maritime climate, high sunshine hours, and cool nights produce white wines with pronounced acidity and aromatic clarity – hallmarks that have redefined global expectations, particularly for Sauvignon Blanc.

With internationally recognized varietal days: Sauvignon Blanc (May 1), Pinot Gris (May 17), and Chardonnay (May 21) – the timing reinforces both relevance and momentum.

As Read emphasizes:

“New Zealand white wines are instantly recognizable—bright, expressive, and refreshing. If any region can make the case for a white wine emoji, it’s New Zealand.
